Each year, its the same routine as we approach the end of December and the beginning of January. We are bombarded with commercials promoting gym memberships, dieting plans, and weight loss solutions, often promising miraculous transformations. The messages are endless: slogans like “New Year, New Me” and “Try this diet” echo through our screens, urging us to embark on the journey of reshaping our bodies.

It’s a predictable pattern, where the hope of a fresh start compels many to seek instant solutions to their fitness and health goals. The underlying theme remains unchanged—a collective longing for physical improvement and the social pressure to conform to ideals that suggest the start of a new year is the perfect moment for self-reinvention.

Setting these unrealistic and unhealthy expectations can be incredibly damaging, not just to our mental health but also to our self-esteem. When we place excessive pressure on ourselves, especially around the New Year, we risk undermining our sense of self-worth. It’s important to remember that the essence of a New Year’s resolution lies in promoting positive growth and embracing healthy changes that enhance our lives and potentially benefit those around us.

Rather than setting unattainable goals that may lead to frustration and disappointment, we can focus on resolutions that are realistic and meaningful. These should be steps aimed at improving our well-being, nurturing our relationships, and enriching our lives. To help you finish this year on a high note and transition into the new one with a strong sense of purpose, here are some thoughtful ideas to inspire you and ensure you’re ready to tackle your aspirations head-on.

Start now!

Many begin their goals enthusiastically, but by mid-year, those ambitions often fade away. One thing many people get wrong with the New Year’s resolution is waiting until the new year to start making changes. Consistency over time is how we form habits. The sooner you get on the right track, the greater your chance of sticking to your goal.

We know it was just Christmas, but why start today? Give yourself the gift of head start to a great new life. One tool we find really helpful in keeping track of my habits, as well as symptoms, feelings, and more, is the Bearable app. It has been extremely beneficial in monitoring my health and identifying when certain symptoms flare up. With its help, I can hold myself accountable and track my goals effectively.

Start with a Positive Mindset

Beginning a goal or resolution with a negative perspective can significantly impact the likelihood of achieving that goal. It’s essential to concentrate on the positive aspects, regardless of whether they appear positive or negative. For instance, if your goal is to quit drinking or smoking, instead of dwelling on the negative implications of these habits, focus on the constructive changes you are making toward a healthier lifestyle. Visualizing these positive outcomes can help create a sense of excitement and motivation that propels you forward.

Additionally, recognizing the small steps you are taking—whether it’s finding new hobbies, joining support groups, or celebrating milestones along the way—can reinforce your commitment to change. Every time you remind yourself of the positive changes you’re making, you’re strengthening your resolve and increasing the likelihood of achieving your goals. Ultimately, focusing on the positives can lead to a more fulfilling journey and greater success in realizing your aspirations.

Set Up a Routine

Having a routine is a necessity for those with chronic and mental illness. It is imperative we stay on track with medication’s, doctors appointments, and overall wellness. I have difficulty struggle with eating and drinking enough water each day, so having a set routine really helps me stay on track with this.

We find that having a few separate routines helps make things easier to divide and conquer! Having a morning routineis imperative to make sure to start off each day right. It includes taking medication, eating breakfast/drink water, my morning skincare, etc. to help make sure to get these essentials completed daily. We usually fill our daily routine filled with essential chores that need to get done regularly to make sure to keep track of those, as well as getting in regular breaks for rest. Lastly, a full skin care routine can you boost self-confidence and improve mental health while keeping your skin healthy.

Keep the End Goal in Mind

Every single day, we experience a whirlwind of changes happening all around us, shaping our environment and influencing our lives in ways we often overlook. The world will not stop spinning for us to catch up, and time will not slow down for anyone.  It’s essential to remain grounded to what truly matters in your life. By keeping your goals at the forefront of your mind, you ensure that they remain a priority rather than allowing them to be overshadowed by the distractions and demands of everyday life.

Amidst the chaos and noise surrounding us, it’s crucial not to lose sight of your dreams and aspirations. Remember to carve out moments of reflection and clarity, enabling you to realign your focus and determination. Stay resolute in your journey, and don’t let external factors deter you from pursuing what you truly want. By maintaining this commitment, you empower yourself to navigate through challenges while holding steadfast to your vision for the future.

Don’t wait

Starting today, we are going to begin implementing these positive changes for a better life. We aren’t going to wait for the New Year or commercials filled with today’s cure all. We are going to start taking the steps, baby steps if you need to, and have a better more fulfilling life.

If you get lost in the negativity of it, remind yourself why you’re doing this. remember that it’s OK to fail as that’s what makes us human. Even if you relapse or miss a day of your goal, don’t get down, keep pushing forward. Build a routine to keep yourself on track and consistently take steps towards your goal. Track your routine by writing it down daily or using Bearable like we do if that’s what keeps you on consistent. So keep your head held high and don’t let anything stop you from making your goals, starting today!
